Steve Irwin was born on the 22nd of February, 1962 in a suburb in Melbourne called Essendon. Born into a family of reptile enthusiasts, Steve was sure to be one himself. Moving to Queensland in 1970, Steve’s parents Bob and Lyn Irwin started up a small reptile park.
On his 6th birthday, Steve received his first pet snake – a 12 foot scrub python. He began handling crocodiles at age 9 after his father had educated him about reptiles from an early age.
After graduating from Caloundra State High School in 1979, he moved to northern Queensland where he worked as a crocodile trapper, removing crocs that could be a danger from populated areas.
Staying in Northern Queensland for 5 years, the family reptile park was turned over to Steve in 1991 and renamed Australia Zoo.
In 1992, Steve met Terri Raines after a crocodile feeding demonstration and fell in love immediately. They got married soon after. Their crocodile-trapping honeymoon was filmed by a man called John Stainton and that was made into the first ever episode of The Crocodile Hunter and was aired in Australia in 1996. His show became wildly popular in the USA and the UK because of his enthusiastic Australian accent and his trademark Khaki shorts and shirt. But the thing we remember him most by is his addictive catchphrase “Crikey!”
After his show, The Crocodile Hunter became wildly popular, Steve set up a conservation fund to protect the Australian wildlife and fauna (now known as Wildlife Warriors).
In 1998, Steve and Terri’s first child was born. They named their baby girl Bindi Sui after Steve’s two favourite pets; a saltwater croc called Bindi and his favourite dog Sui who died in 2004. In 2003, baby Bob was born, his full name being Robert Clarence “Bob” Irwin who was named after Steve’s dad.
On the 4th of September 2006, Steve was out filming a documentary out on the Great Barrier Reef for his daughter Bindi when he was fatally pierced in the chest by a stingray barb. Immediately, the world was in shock. It seemed so surreal that the invincible Steve Irwin had been killed.

He has graced our air since October 1996 and was essential in building Animal Planet into a global brand.”
On the 9th of September, the Irwin family held a private funeral in Caloundra after rejecting a state funeral from the government. On Wednesday the 20th of September, the Australia Zoo will be holding a goodbye Tribute in the Crocoseum for all the supporters to pay their last respects.
